New York’s Senator Gillibrand has added her voice to a call for country of origin labeling (COOL) to be expanded to dairy products, following a further recall last month of melamine-tainted milk from China. The bill proposed retaining the exemption for processed foods, but if passed, it would require COOL labeling for dairy products including milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and butter.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has launched a new online mapping tool to assess American food environments and how a range of factors may relate to diet-related illnesses. The tool, Your Food Environment Atlas, has been designed for the use of food policy makers, researchers, and the general public. Users can pick from a list of variables, such as proximity to grocery stores, food insecurity, physical activity levels, food taxes, health, and food prices, among others, and apply them to any American state.

Bemis will have to sell Alcan cheese and meat packaging assets to secure its $1.2bn takeover of Alcan Packaging Food Americas. The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) approved the acquisition this week on condition that Bemis sell Alcan cheese and meat packing assets worth $100m including two facilities in Catoosa, Oklahoma, and Menasha, Wisconsin.
