General Mills to Stop Using Milk From Cows Treated With Hormones

General Mills Inc. will cease using milk from cows treated with bovine growth hormone to produce its Yoplait Yogurt, the company has stated.

The Golden Valley-based food company said more than 70 percent of the milk it uses is produced by cows that haven’t been injected with the hormone, known as rBGH. General Mills (NYSE: GIS) plans to completely eliminate use of milk from treated cows by August.

Bovine growth hormone is injected into cows to increase milk production. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved its use, though some consumer-advocacy groups have said it’s harmful to human health.

General Mills decided to make the change in response to consumer demand, not out of concern for safety, the company said in a press statement.
