3-A SSI Announces Expanded Education Programs and 2009 Annual Meeting

3-A Sanitary Standards, Inc. (3-A SSI) announced plans for an expanded education program lineup and the schedule for the 2009 Annual Meeting to be held May 18-22, 2009 at the Wyndham Milwaukee Airport in Milwaukee, WI.

A half-day Pharmaceutical 3-A (P3-A) Education Program will open the two days of 3-A SSI education events on Monday, May 18.  This is a program of special interest for professionals interested in the development or application of equipment standards for the production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).  This program consists of a general education session and open Work Group meetings of the P3-A Steering Committee.

Topics for the program will include:
    • The Mission of P3-A Standards – What benefits will the new P3-A standards bring for fabricators, users, and advancing regulatory compliance?  What is the scope of the new standards relative to other equipment standards?  Hear the perspectives of leading fabricators and users.
    • New P3-A Standards in the Marketplace - Three new P3-A American National Standards were introduced in 2008 for Materials, Terminology, and Centrifugal Pumps.  How are these standards serving as the framework for greater economy and efficiency in the marketplace for API equipment?
    • The New P3-A Symbol and Third Party Verification - This session will introduce the new P3-A Symbol and the authorization to display the new symbol on equipment that conforms to P3-A Standards.  Elements of the Third Party Verification inspection required for use of the P3-A Symbol will be explored in-depth.
    • Introduction and Overview of Proposed New Standards - Work Group leaders will introduce P3-A Standards in development for four new equipment groups: Agitated Filter Dryers, Vessels and Agitators, Mills and Classification Equipment, and Process Heat Exchangers.

The second education program, The Science of Cleaning, will be held on Tuesday, May 19.  This program will open with expert international perspectives on sanitary design and the certification requirements of the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) and views on the respective sanitary design criteria from U.S. regulatory sanitarians, processors, and fabricators.  Other topics will explore leading trends in equipment, materials and designs in the U.S. marketplace.  The subjects will expand the knowledge of professionals on the proper design, installation, operation and maintenance of equipment.

Topics and speakers for the May 19 program will include:

    • EHEDG Perspective on Equipment Design and Guidelines - Knuth Lorenzen (GEA Tuchenhagen), President, EHEDG and Dr. Mark Morgan, Purdue University.
    • U.S. Views on Design and Inspection Criteria – U.S. perspectives from regulatory sanitarians, processors and fabricators.  Regulatory sanitarians:  Steve Sims, Milk Safety Branch, FDA, Philip Wolff, USDA/AMS, Dairy Grading Branch; Processors:  Richard K. Smith, Consultant; Fabricators: TBA.
