USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service released its annual report on the demographics of the U.S. dairy industry in 2008. Dairy farm numbers dropped in all size categories, except for those with more than 2,000 cows, whose numbers rose from 680 operations in 2007 to 730 in 2008. Herds of 500 head and higher produced 59% of the nation’s milk supply in 2008.
