China Imports 62% More Whole Milk Powder

New Zealand whole milk powder (WMP) exports to China totaled 124,938 tons in January 2014, up from 76,963 tons at the same time last year. This increase is part of a seasonal swell as importers look to take advantage of the lower tariff rates that are on offer early in the year as part of the NZ:China Free Trade Agreeement.

Fonterra Volumes to GlobalDairyTrade Greater Than Forecast

Fonterra has announced the volume of product to be offered at the GlobalDairyTrade event to be held on March 4, 2014. Compared to the last auction, volumes have been increased for most of the main products on offer. In the case of anhydrous milkfat (AMF) slightly less product will be offered than at the previous auction.

January U.S. Milk Production Up 0.9%

US milk production totaled 17.3 billion pounds in January, up 2.8%  vs. the prior month and 0.9% greater than last year, according to USDA’s Milk Production report. January 2014 milk production in the 23 major states was estimated at 16.08 billion lbs.

FDA Resolves Deadlines for FSMA Final Rules Through Settlement

Deadlines for publishing final rules for the Food Safety Modernization Act will extend beyond the June 2015 cutoff and will be staggered under a settlement reached between the FDA, the Center for Food Safety and the Center for Environmental Health. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court appeal filed by the FDA in the dispute with the two groups will be dropped in exchange. The new deadline for preventive controls for animal food and preventive controls for human food is Aug. 30, 2015, while the deadline for third-party accreditation, the foreign supplier verification program and produce safety is Oct. 31, 2015. The deadline for sanitary transport is set for March 31, 2016, while the deadline for intentional adulteration is May 31, 2016.

Overall Prices Fall Back By 1.2% at Fonterra Auction

Dairy product prices have recorded their biggest drop since early November in the latest GlobalDairyTrade auction, with the volume sold falling to an eight-month low. Milk protein concentrate and butter led the decline. The GDT Price Index fell 1.2 percent from the last sale two weeks ago. The average winning price was US$5,016 a ton from US$5,042 a ton at the last auction.
