Low milk prices and high production costs ate into farmer margins while low global dairy commodity prices and weak macroeconomic performance dimmed consumption opportunities both domestically and abroad. For most of the year the sector battled to find sustainable balance between supply and demand.

Forecast Lift in Milk Production Sees World Dairy Prices Fall 3.2%

Global dairy prices fell at an auction held on February 21st, on signals that milk production would be higher than expected. Average prices dipped 3.2 percent at the Global Dairy Trade auction, which takes place twice a month, with an average selling price of $3,474 per ton. Prices for whole milk powder fell 3.7 percent while skim milk powder fell 3.8 percent.

World Dairy Prices Rise 1.3 Percent at Global Dairy Trade Auction

World dairy product prices gained at the GlobalDairyTrade auction, bucking expectations for a decline, as both whole and skim milk powder rose. The GDT price index rose 1.3% with an average selling price of $3,537 at the February 7th  auction, while product volume sold was down 3.4% to 21,273 tons.
