Fonterra To Grow Organic Milk and Milk Powder Business

Fonterra will expand its organic milk business, which includes organic milk powders for infant formula and fortified milks, in response to increased global demand, particularly in Southeast Asia, China and the U.S., according to Craig Deadman, Fonterra's global business manager for Organics.

UK Dairy Exports Reach Record High in 2014

UK dairy exports reached a ‘record high’ last year, driven by strong demand for British cheese, according to the latest data from the Food & Drink Federation (FDF). The FDF’s Export Snapshot for January-December 2014 revealed that dairy exports surged by 8.83% to £1.4bn in 2014, outperforming the rest of the food and drink sector in terms of growth.

New Zealand Signs Free Trade Deal with South Korea

New Zealand has signed a free trade agreement (FTA) with South Korea that cut duties by $65 million in its first year. The biggest beneficiaries of the agreement will be the beef and dairy industries. Dairy trade is worth $263m, with exporters at present paying tariffs of between 8 and 176 percent.

New Zealand Sees More Cheese as Europe Ramps Up Dairy Production

Fonterra isn’t troubled by an expected surge in European milk production as it will be used to make cheese, and won’t meet China’s taste for milk powders. When the European Union removes restrictions April 1 that have limited dairy expansion on the continent for three decades, production in the greenbelt of Europe will grow 4 percent to 5 percent a year, according to Fonterra Chief Executive Officer Theo Spierings.

CWT Assists with 7.7 Million Pounds of Cheese and Butter Export Sales

February Milk Production Up 1.7%

Nationally, February 2015 milk production was estimated at 16.17 billion lbs., up 1.7% from February 2014, according to USDA’s monthly report, released March 19th. Nineteen of the 23 states saw an increase in production compared to a year ago. The largest milk producing state, California, again showed a sharp reduction in production with output down 3.8% from a year ago. But Wisconsin showed strong growth of 4.3%, while Idaho and New York showed more modest growth at .5% and 2.3% respectively.
