Complex Dairy Landscape Pushes Chobani to Idaho

Because of the complexity of milk pricing, Agro Farma, maker of Chobani yogurt, is unable to increase milk supply in upstate New York, so it is building a plant in Idaho. Cornell University professor Andrew Novakovic wrote a paper, "The Chobani Paradox," about the reasons expansion is difficult for New York dairy farmers, including high land prices and taxes.

Danone to Acquire 67% Stake in Moroccan Dairy Giant

French dairy firm Danone SA (DANOY) has announced it will boost stake in Moroccan dairy product company Centrale Laitière to become its controlling majority stake holder. Danone will acquire the stake from Moroccan Investment fund Société Nationale d'Investissement or SNI and boost its stake to about 67.0 percent for a total consideration of 550 million euros or $685 million.

Grassland Dairy Expansion Increases Milk Powder and Butter Production

The Greenwood-based Grassland Dairy Products, Inc., which is the largest family owned butter creamery in the world, announced that it's recent expansion project will allow them to double its milk capacity and overall production output. In addition, Grassland also recently installed two state-of-the-art milk driers allowing the plant to dry 28,000 pounds of powder per hour or 4.7 million pounds weekly.
