The Spring of 2015 will be remembered in the dairy industry in some ways like September 11th, 2001 is remembered by many in the USA.  Our innocence and confidence were both assaulted by the Blue Bell and shortly thereafter, the Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream recalls.  At the late April’s National Conference on Interstate Milk Shipments (NCIMS), the recall subject was the first topic of discussion, whether it was in a group of industry, state dairy regulators, FDA headquarters or Regional Milk Specialists or a mixed group of some or all these parts of the US dairy industry. It was clear that both state and FDA regulators intended to increase their sampling of ice cream products for the near future.

Hilmar Cheese Expands Production Facility in Texas

Hilmar Cheese Co. has announced that it is increasing production at its plant in Dalhart, Texas. It processes cheese into 40- and 640-pound blocks and will add 500-pound barrel production. “We are expanding to meet our customers’ growing demand for our products,” said Hilmar Cheese Chief Operating Officer David Ahlem. “Both global and domestic cheese consumption continues to increase.”

Australia Produces Less Whole Milk Powder

Manufacturers in Australia have concentrated on producing cheese and skim milk powder (SMP) this season. Skim milk powder (SMP) has increased by 15.3%. Cheese production is up 11.7%. Whole milk powder (WMP) production has reduced by a quarter this season. Data from July 2014 to April 2015 shows 81,784 tons of WMP was manufactured. This compares with 108,739 tons during the same time period the previous season.

May Milk Production Up 1.4%

The United States Department of Agriculture reported this week that May milk production rose 1.4%. Milk per cow in the 23 major dairy states averaged 1,990 lb., the highest since the 23-state series was begun in 2003. GDT Buyers Still Trading In Low Demand Environment

GlobalDairyTrade (GDT) has released its second quarter report. It offers analysis of dairy ingredient products over the three month period from April-June 2015. The GDT quarterly said the whole milk powder (WMP) average price decreased by 12.8%  and skimmed milk powder (SMP) decreased by 19.7% from Q1 to Q2 2015. Over the same period, butter and butter milk powder (BMP) experienced the largest decrease in average price of 22% and 26% respectively.

Darigold’s Plant Expansion is Well Underway in Sunnyside, Washington
