USDA Predicts Food Prices Could Rise 4.5% in 2011

In its monthly retail food inflation forecast, the U.S. Department of Agriculture now says food prices will likely increase between 3.5% and 4.5% this year, a change from its previous estimate of between 3% and 4%. Food prices rose just 0.8% in 2010. "We haven't had this kind of inflation since the 1970s," said SUPERVALU CEO Craig Herkert.

Fonterra Cuts 2012 Forecast on Milk Payments

Fonterra Cooperative Group, New Zealand's biggest company by sales, says the decline in its milk payment next year will be greater than it previously forecast, reflecting a high kiwi dollar and weaker commodity prices. Fonterra now expects to pay $6.70 to $6.80 for milk payments in the 2011-12 season, down from the previous forecast of $7.15 to $7.25.
