U.S. Dairy Exports Face Marketing Challenges Created by Drought

U.S. dairy suppliers will be tested next year as the drought diminishes milk supply and agricultural production around the world, the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) says. The decline in U.S. milk production will hit U.S. milk powder and butter the hardest, according to the October 2012 edition of USDEC’s “Export Profile” newsletter. USDEC estimates that nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder (NDM/SMP) production will drop 8-10% over the next 12 months, which equates to about 90,000 tons.

Canadian 2012 Dairy and Products Annual Report

According to the FAS's latest Canadian Dairy and Products 2012 Report, milk production is forecast to increase in 2013 due to an increase in Canadian dairy requirements by the dairy processing industry. Butter production is forecast to ease in 2013 due to strong butter stocks. As a result of the forecasted decrease in butter production, skim milk powder production is also expected to decrease slightly. Cheese production in 2013 is expected to stay near year 2012 levels.

U.S. Milk Production Declined in September

Total U.S. production of milk fell .05% to 15.7 billion-lbs., with gains in Wisconsin and Minnesota among the best in the nation. Wisconsin harvested 2.2 billion-lbs. last month, a 3% improvement over the September 2011 yield due to more productive cows, according to USDA. The average cow produced 1,720 pounds of milk last month, 40-lbs. more than a year-ago, while production in California fell 4% to 3.2 billion-lbs. in September.

FSMA Registration Process is Open for Business
