Skim Milk Powder and Butter Continue To Move Into Private Storage Aid

Butter and skim milk powder (SMP) continue to flow into the storage scheme that is subsidies by the EU government. In the week up to December 21st a further 552 tons of SMP and 112 tons of butter was placed into Private Storage Aid (PSA). This brings the total amount of butter in storage to 20,905 tons and 16,375 tons of SMP.

U.S. Dairy Industry Praises Outcome of Talks With China on Cheese Name Issue

A favorable outcome of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade meetings should facilitate export of products like feta and parmesan cheese to China, which is a particularly large and fast-growing market for U.S. dairy products. “We are extremely pleased that the United States and China have agreed to strong protections for products using these well-established cheese names as we seek to expand exports to this key market,” said Tom Suber, president of the U.S. Dairy Export Council.

GlobalDairyTrade (GDT), has a new report to provide insights into global dairy commodity prices. The GDT Quarterly, hows that overall dairy prices fell in Q4, 2014 (October to December) at a slower rate than in Q3, 2014. The GDT Price Index declined by 1% in Q4 2014 compared to a decline of 22% in the previous quarter (July to Sept 2014).

Prices Rise At Last Fonterra Global Dairy Trade Auction of the Year

Fonterra’s Global Dairy Trade for dairy products saw prices rise by 2.4% in the last auction of 2014. The trade-weighted GDT price index was up 2.4%, lifting it off a five-year low but prices are still down nearly 50% since February.

Glanbia Ingredients Ireland Opens Milk Protein Plant

Glanbia Ingredients Ireland’s (GII) has officially opened newly-built milk protein facility on the existing GII site in Virginia, County Cavan, Ireland. Over €7.8 million ($9.5m) has been invested in the Virginia plant to build the new milk protein unit, which will more than double current milk protein capacity from 4,000 to 10,000 tons. It is a significant boost for the Virginia facility which will also continue its extensive production of enriched milk powders for export markets as well as exclusive cream supply to the global Baileys brand.
