China's Dairy Imports for 2014

China’s dairy imports during 2014 were at record levels for whole milk powder (WMP), skim milk powder (SMP), and cheese. Remarkable first and second quarter imports eventually lead to oversupply and a collapse to prices and imports. WMP imports in the first and second quarters of 2014 were 72% and 76% higher than imports in 2013. A similar trend was seen in SMP, where first and second quarter imports were up 100% and 62% year-on-year respectively.

Arla Foods Inaugurates New German Facility To Boost Dairy Processing Capabilities

European dairy cooperative Arla Foods has officially inaugurated a brand-new production area at its German site in Pronsfeld, near Bitburg-PrĂ¼m in the Eifel district. After approximately three years of planning and construction, Peder Tuborgh, CEO of Arla Foods, along with the Chief Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer, joined forces to inaugurate the new production systems. A total of about €110 million ($125 million) was invested in the construction of a new milk drying tower, a new creamery and additional milk preparation and processing capacity.

December U.S. Milk Production Up 3.2%

Nationally, December milk production was estimated at 17.32 billion lbs., up 3.2% from December 2013, according to USDA’s monthly report, released January 22, 2015. December milk production in the 23 major dairy states totaled 16.24 billion lbs., up 3.2% from December 2013. Cow numbers in those states was estimated at 8.611 million head, 107,000 head more than December 2013, and 16,000 head more than November 2014. Production per cow averaged 1,886 lbs. for December, 35 lbs. more than December 2013. This is the highest production per cow for the month of December since the 23-state series began in 2003.

Whole Milk Powder Up 3.8% at GlobalDairyTrade Auction
