CWT Assists with 3.6 Million Pounds of Cheese, Butter and Whole Milk Powder Export Sales

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) has accepted 15 requests for export assistance to sell 2.094 million pounds (950 metric tons) of Cheddar cheese, 1.185 million pounds (538 metric tons) of 82% butter and 308,647 pounds (140 metric tons) of whole milk powder to customers in Africa, Asia, Central America, the Middle East and North Africa.

Fonterra Begins Construction on First Blending and Packing Plant in Indonesia

Fonterra has began construction on its first blending and packing plant in Indonesia, which will support the growth of its market leading consumer brands Anlene, Anmum and Anchor Boneeto. Once complete, the plant will have the capacity to pack and blend 12,000 tons of advanced and base nutrition milk powder products annually, which is the equivalent to about 87,000 packs of Anlene, Anmum, and Anchor Boneeto every day.

Bluegrass Proteins to Invest $18.2 Million in Facility to Dry Whey And Produce Proteins and Permeates

ADPI member, Bluegrass Proteins has been selected as one of five companies  to receive monies from the  Minnesota Job Creation Fund, a $24 million program. Bluegrass Proteins will use these funds to expand into a shuttered American Milk Products Inc. building located in Dawson, Minnesota. The company will invest about $18.2 million in the facility, which will dry whey to produce proteins and permeates as a food additive.

FDA Announces Extension of Comment Period on Proposed Rule on Intentional Adulteration

FDA is announcing the extension of the comment period on “Focused Mitigation Strategies to Protect Food Against Intentional Adulteration,” and the associated Draft Qualitative Risk Assessment, which was published in the December 24, 2013, Federal Register. FDA has considered requests to extend the comment period and is granting a 90-day extension to June 30, 2014.

Chinese Dairy Demand led by Milk, Flavored Drinks and Yogurt

Dairy Rally About to Reverse as China Buying Wanes

The dairy price rally, which has taken values to record highs in some markets, is about to go into reverse as growth in Chinese demand eases, but the fall will not be steep, Rabobank said. The bank, in a much-watched quarterly report, acknowledged that prices in the January-to-March period had exceeded its expectations, with Oceania skim milk powder, for instance, averaging $4,850 a ton, $150 a ton more than it had forecast.

DFA Marketed 60.6 Billion Pounds of Milk in 2013

ADPI member, Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) reported net income of $61.3 million for 2013 with net sales totaling $12.1 billion, up 6% from 2012, citing "strong operating results" from its wholly owned commercial investments and increased earnings from affiliates. It directed the marketing of 60.6 billion pounds of milk during the year for both members and others, about 30% of the total U.S. milk production.

U.S. Milk Production Up 1.4% in February

February 2014 milk production in the 23 major dairy states totaled 14.92 billion lbs., up 1.4% from February 2013, according to USDA’s monthly Milk Production report. Nationally, production was estimated at 15.94 billion lbs., up 1.1% from the year before.
