Advocates for farmers cheered when Congress approved a $350 million aid package last month for dairy producers. But a simple purchasing decision by the U.S. Department of Agriculture could determine how much help farmers actually receive. The USDA must decide in the coming weeks how to spend the $60 million Congress set aside for government purchases of dairy products. Farm groups and dairy state lawmakers are pushing for all of that money to be spent on cheese, which would quickly boost the price farmers are paid for milk. Milk processors, looking to blunt the price increases, would like to see the government buy yogurt and other products that don't correlate as closely to milk prices.

In a response to an inquiry today from the Cheese Market News, the American Dairy Products Institute issued the following comments regarding the proposed the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, which was approved yesterday by a unanimous vote of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.  "ADPI supports efforts to improve the overall safety of the U.S. food supply, but it should be noted that the dairy industry has one of the best safety records in the food industry. Pasteurized dairy products account for less than 1% of all reported food contamination outbreaks," remarked Dale Kleber, Chief Executive Officer of the American Dairy Products Institute.
