Sargento COO and Executive VP, Mark Rhyan, Passes Away

Sargento Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President Mark Rhyan passed away December 25th at the age of 53 following an illness. Rhyan began working for Sargento in 1992 as the company's director of tax. "Mark was a person that cared a great deal about people. He wanted to help obviously the company succeed, but he also wanted (people) to succeed both professionally and personally," former Sargento CEO Lou Gentine said.

China’s November Whole Milk Powder Purchases Are Recording Breaking; Dairy Imports For 2014 To Stay Strong

China's whole milk powder imports, whose soaring growth this year has been key to supporting dairy prices near record levels, are to grow nearly as fast in 2014, with purchases of skim milk powder and whey to prove strong too. China purchased a record-breaking 93,151 metric tons (MT) or 205 million lbs. of whole milk powder (WMP) in November 2013, up 72% from already high import volumes in October 2013 and 23,158 MT (51 million lbs.) of skim milk powder, up 5.3% from October and 152% greater than November 2012.

DFA and Dairylea Plan 2014 Merger

Dairy Farmers of America and Dairylea Cooperative have announced plans to merge in 2014, making the regional Dairylea co-op a brand name under the 13,000 member, 48-state DFA cooperative. The takeover, which would reduce competition among milk-producing cooperatives, is not unanimously supported by members of DFA or Dairylea despite a close existing relationship between the two entities.

First Milk Confirms Cheese Packing Plant Closure

First Milk has confirmed its cheese packing plant in Wrexham, Wales will close this spring with the loss of 230 jobs. In October, they announced it was planning to shut its Maelor packing operation at Marchwiel, Wrexham, in May 2014 after losing a major contract from superstore giant Asda. It packs more than 30,000 tons of cheese a year of which Asda provided about 20,000 tons worth.

November Milk Production Up Just 0.3%

November milk production totaled 14.98 billion lbs. in the 23 major dairy states, up just 0.3% from November 2012, according to preliminary data in the latest USDA Milk Production report. November cow numbers in those states totaled 8.5 million head, down 4,000 from October, but 22,000 more than a year ago. Output per cow averaged 1,762 lbs., up just 1 lb. from November 2012.

Russia’s consumers rights watchdog has lift a ban on Lithuanian dairy products it set in October. Officials ordered the ban on the import of Lithuanian dairy products and toughened control over meat and fish products in October, citing sanitary violations.

Dairy Prices Rise At Auction, While Volumes Fall

International milk prices rose for the third time in a row while volumes fell in the latest auction held by Fonterra. The December 17th GlobalDairyTrade event recorded an average winning price of US$4,990/ton across the 47,858 tons of product sold. The total volume of product sold was down 7.9% from the previous auction. However, the GDT Price Index increased by 0.2% to 1,466 points.
