Milk Sales Decreased 7% in 2015

Sales of dairy milk decreased 7% in 2015 and are projected to drop another 11% through 2020, according to Mintel. Non-dairy milk offerings continued seeing strong sales, growing 9% in 2015 to $1.9 billion. Among non-dairy milk consumers, nearly half drink it at least once a day, including 57% of parents.

Study Finds Full-Fat Dairy Can Protect Against Type 2 Diabetes

Full-fat dairy products may help cut the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, a new study has found. Author Dariush Mozaffarian and colleagues followed 3,333 adults over two decades, finding "people who had the most dairy fat in their diet had about a 50% lower risk of diabetes." The results seem to support a growing number of studies that have found full-fat dairy products can help cut obesity risk by reducing cravings for high-carb foods.

Westland Milk Opens New UHT Plant

Westland Milk Products has already received “substantial orders” for products from its new $40 million ultra high temperature (UHT) plant in Rolleston, New Zealand. The plant was officially opened  on April 15th by Hon. Jo Goodhew, Minister for Food Safety.  Westland Chief Executive Rod Quin says the commissioning of the UHT plant marks Westland’s first step into producing and exporting liquid milk, in addition to its powder-based products and butter.

Research Suggests Full-Fat Milk May Be Healthy Choice

A study in Circulation found people with higher levels of three byproducts from full-fat milk had a 46% lower risk of diabetes, adding to evidence suggesting low-fat milk may not always be the healthiest option, researchers said. Dariush Mozaffarian said the data support changing policies that recommend only low-fat dairy and show recommendations about food should not be based on theories about a single nutrient.

Rabobank: Dairy Market to Improve in 2017

Rabobank has forecast that the global dairy market outlook will remain weak throughout 2016, with prices expected to pick up going into 2017. According to the bank’s Global Dairy Quarterly Q1 2016 report, in Australia, local farmgate prices have been largely shielded from the severe global dairy market crash as a result of value-adding strategies adopted by local producers to shift milk away from commodities.

Tetra Pak Purchases Plastic Cheese Mold Maker

Tetra Pak Cheese and Powder Systems has made a deal to acquire semi-hard cheese mold maker Laude in an effort to expand its cheese offerings, according to Tim High, executive vice president of processing systems for Tetra Pak. Laude will continue to design and produce molds, plastic parts for cheese draining and forming equipment following the sale.
