GEA Strengthens Cheese Production Line Technology With CMT Acquisition

GEA has completed the acquisition of CMT S.p.A., a leading supplier of single equipment and integrated production lines for pasta filata cheese (fresh mozzarella and pizza cheese). Thereby, GEA reinforces once more its capabilities at the growing sector of cheese processing after the recent acquisition of de Klokslag, a leading supplier of large scale equipment for semi-hard cheese production in Europe with revenues of more than EUR 35 million in 2014.

FDA Announces Final Determination that Partially Hydrogenated Oils are Not GRAS

On June 16, 2015, FDA announced its final determination that there is no longer a consensus among qualified experts that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) are “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) for any use in human food. In effect, PHOs will now be regulated as food additives, which – unlike GRAS substances – require premarket approval by FDA prior to use in food.  FDA has provided a compliance date of June 18, 2018, which means that the food industry will have three (3) years to remove PHOs from food products or seek regulatory clearance for low level use of PHOs, either through a food additive petition or food contact notification.

No Relief at Fonterra's GlobalDairyTrade Auction

A mixed bag of results from the GlobalDairyTrade June 16th auction saw dairy prices fall for the seventh consecutive time. The GDT Price Index, which covers a variety of products and contract periods in the auction, fell 1.3% from the previous auction on June 2. The average selling price was $2,409 a metric ton.
