Prices Up 9.9% at Fonterra GlobalDairyTrade Auction

Dairy prices at the October 6th GlobalDairyTrade auction rose for the fourth consecutive time after months of falling prices. The GDT Price Index increased 9.9 percent, hitting an average price of US$2,834 per metric ton and giving further hope that global dairy prices will stabilize.

August Cheese Production up 3.5%

Cheese production in the US increased by 3.5% to 974 million pounds during August, placing the industry ahead of 2014's year-to-date production by 2.5%, according to the latest USDA report. Production of nonfat dry milk, dry whey, low-fat ice cream and hard sherbet were also up during the month, while skim milk powders, lactose, whey protein concentrate, regular ice cream and frozen yogurt dropped, the USDA reported.

Saputo Increase it’s Presence in the Specialty Cheese Category in North America by Acquiring Woolwich Dairy

Saputo Inc. has announced it will acquire Woolwich Dairy, an Orangeville, Ontario-based company with manufacturing facilities in Ontario, Quebec and Wisconsin. According to a Saputo press release, the company reported paying $80 million in cash to close the deal. Woolwich generates revenues of approximately $70 million a year, producing, distributing, marketing and selling goat cheese across North America.

Russian Dairy Ban Likely To Stay

The Russian ban on dairy imports from a number of Western countries is unlikely to be lifted until at least 2018, according to Dairy Australia managing director Ian Halliday. Mr Halliday, who is just back from the World Dairy Summit held in Lithuania, told the Dairy Industry Sustainability Framework consultative group forum that Australian dairy farmers should not expect Russia to be back in the market anytime soon.

Nestle in Talks to Merge International Ice Cream Operations with R&R

Nestle is in "advanced discussions" to merge its international ice cream business with R&R Ice Cream, in its latest effort to refocus on other, higher-performing brands. Nestle said it will contribute its ice cream businesses in Europe, Egypt, the Philippines,Brazil and Argentina, as well as its European frozen food businesses, excluding pizza but including products like frozen cake brand Erlenbacher. Its ice cream operations in the United States, which include Haagen-Dazs, Edy's and Dreyer's, will not be part of the deal.

China Mengniu Dairy Will Transfer its Two Milk Powder Businesses to Subsidiary Yashili International Holdings

China Mengniu Dairy will transfer its two milk powder businesses to subsidiary Yashili International Holdings. The leading Chinese dairy producer is aiming to secure profit by improving its efficiency. Yashili is a major milk formula producer. Mengniu Dairy established a joint venture with Denmark's Arla Foods in 2005. The venture company produces high-end milk powder and sells its products under the brand name of Mengniuarla. On Sept. 21, Mengniu Dairy announced that it will sell the venture business to Yashili International, which now has about a 51% stake in the business. The price tag is roughly 1.05 billion yuan ($165 million).

CWT Assists with 8 million Pounds of Cheese, Butter and Whole Milk Powder Export Sales

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) has accepted 18 requests for export assistance to sell 465,175 pounds (949 metric tons) of Cheddar and Gouda cheese,  6.515 million pounds (2,955 metric tons) of butter and 1.041 million pounds (472 metric tons) of whole milk powder to customers in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and South America.

Fonterra Expands Products Offered in Contract Period 1

Fonterra is expanding the range of products it offers in the nearby delivery contract on GlobalDairyTrade. Fonterra will begin to offer SMP, BMP, AMF, Butter, Cheddar and Rennet Casein on Contract Period 1 (i.e. for shipment in the month immediately following the Trading Event) from Trading Event 151 on November 3, 2015.
