Fonterra Expands Capacity in High-Value Lactoferrin

It takes 10,000 liters of milk and incredibly sophisticated technology to make just one kilogram of lactoferrin – a high-value ingredient that Fonterra has recently doubled its capacity to produce. The new $11 million upgrade of the lactoferrin plant at the Co-operative’s Hautapu site is now running at full volume, helping to meet growing worldwide demand for the product affectionately known as ‘pink gold’.

Select Milk and Southwest Cheese Expanding in Texas and New Mexico

New Mexico-based Select Milk Producers is expanding its presence in Texas with the acquisition and $250 million conversion of a former cotton mill into a milk processing plant. Joint venture Southwest Cheese will increase its milk processing operations by 30% over the next two years with an investment of $140 million from partners Glanbia and dairy cooperative members of the Greater Southwest Agency.

Australian Murray Goulburn buys Tasmanian Dairy Products

Murray Goulburn has acquired Mitsubishi Corporation's remaining 24.1 percent in Tasmanian Dairy Products Co Pty Ltd (TDP) for $4.8 million. As a result of the acquisition, MG assumes 100 percent ownership of TDP – one of Tasmania's largest dairy companies processing approximately 25 percent of Tasmania's milk.
