Fonterra Pleads Guilty to Food-Safety Violations

Fonterra Co-Operative Group Ltd. will plead guilty to charges laid by New Zealand after a recall of baby-milk products last year. The company faces four charges including exporting products that failed to meet food-safety standards and failing to notify government officials as soon as it discovered potentially deadly bacteria in some of its products.

Milk Prices At An All-Time High Thanks To Cheese Exports

American dairy farmers are selling milk at the highest prices on record, up 17% in January on the previous year. What’s driving the price increase is likely cheese exports. Cheese is off the charts—prices were up 31% in January on the previous year, according to US Department of Agriculture data, compared with a 17% rise in milk prices.

U.S. Dairy Exports Start Strong in 2014

U.S. exports picked up in 2014 where they left off in 2013, according to monthly summaries from the U.S. Dairy Export Council. U.S. suppliers shipped 162,999 tons of milk powder, cheese, butterfat, whey and lactose in January, up 19% from last year, and about the same volume as the last four months of 2013. Total value of all exports was $583.7 million, up 35% from a year ago.

Fonterra to Sell Infant Formula in More Chinese Cities

Fonterra is working to expand sales of its Anmum infant formula in China to stores located in the cities of Chengdu and Chongqing. Competition in the Chinese baby milk market has increased since the government there introduced new regulatory changes to inspire consumer confidence. Fonterra plans to expand sales of Anmum to 70 Chinese cities over the next three years, according to company CEO Theo Spierings.

Danone May Invest in Baby Formula and Dairy Products Market With Sale of Medical Nutrition Business

Danone might look to position itself to invest in the growing baby food and dairy products markets by selling its medical nutrition business, according to analysts. The company is reportedly looking to invest outside of Europe, in such markets as China, East Africa and Latin America. "A sale of the entire Medical Nutrition business could be a strategic decision if Danone is looking for 5-7 billion euros [$7-10 billion] financial capacity for one or several acquisitions," Natixis analyst Pierre Tegner said.

GDT Price Index Drops 4% in March 4th Auction

Dairy product prices recorded their biggest decline since June last year in the latest GlobalDairyTrade auction . The GDT Price Index fell 4 percent from the last sale two weeks ago. The average winning price was US$4,794 a ton from US$5,016 a ton at the last auction.  A total of 41,086 tons of product was sold, an increase of 18.9% from the previous sale.
