CWT Assists with 2.0 Million Pounds of Cheese and Whole Milk Powder Export Sales

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) has accepted 9 requests for export assistance to sell 1.294 million pounds (587 metric tons) of Cheddar, Gouda, and Monterey Jack cheese, and 661,387 pounds (300 metric tons) of whole milk powder to customers in Asia, Central America, South America.

SMP Production in EU Expected to Increase by 8%

The European Commission's Milk Market Observatory has released its summer 2015 Short-term outlook for EU arable crops, dairy, and meat markets in 2015 and 2016. For the dairy sector, the continuation of the Russian import ban translates mainly into lower exports of cheese despite a strong re-direction of trade to other destinations.  The additional milk is channeled into SMP and butter. Therefore, in 2015, SMP production is expected to increase by close to 8%.

First Stage of Sustainability Project Complete for One of Largest UK Cheese Creameries

The British company Clearfleau, a UK-based provider of on-site AD-based treatment solutions for the food and beverage sector, has finished the first stage in a major sustainability project for First Milk, at one of the UK's largest cheese creameries. Once operational, the plant will feed bio-methane into the gas grid - the first dairy processing site in Europe to do so. The integrated on-site AD plant will take over from the existing aerobic plant in early 2016 and will treat the creamery’s wastewater output as well as its whey permeate.

Saputo Sees Potential in Brazil

Saputo Inc. has seen a 42% increase in revenues in the current fiscal year and says they’re looking to grow even more through future acquisitions.  “We’ll be happy with the 1% to 2% growth in the developed North American markets and maintain our presence there,” says CEO Lino Saputo Jr., “but we’re tapping into emerging markets that are showing more growth potential than the developed markets.” One of the most tantalizing markets, Saputo says, is Brazil, which ranks fifth in dairy production in the world and was the largest milk producer in Latin America in 2008, with a market share of 46%, according to a report by the Wisconsin International Trade Team. Saputo sees big opportunity there because Brazil’s dairy industry is still very fragmented and, geographically, it’s close to Argentina, where the Canadian company already has a base.

FrieslandCampina Opens Dairy Zone in Vietnam

FrieslandCampina has inaugurated a sustainable dairy zone in the province of Ha Nam, northern Vietnam. The 66ha site in the municipality of Moc Bac – 25 miles southeast of Hanoi – will become a model dairy zone as part of a wider collaboration between Dutch and Vietnamese authorities. The project aims to establish and develop specialized dairy zones for family farms, contribute to Vietnam’s food security, create jobs for the economy and reduce the country’s dependence on imported milk.

Fall of New Zealand Exports Led by 37% Drop in WMP Value

Total goods exports for New Zealand fell $214 million (4.7%) to $4.4 billion in May 2015 compared with May 2014, Statistics New Zealand says. The fall in milk powder, butter, and cheese exports was led by whole milk powder, down 37%, with quantities down 6.9%.
