The product volumes being offered at through GlobalDairyTrade (GDT) auction by Fonterra over the next 12 months has dropped dramatically from what was previously forecasted. Over the next 12 months Fonterra plans to put 438,500 tons of whole milk powder (WMP) up for sale on GDT. This is a 21% decrease from the previous season.

A new contamination scare hit New Zealand's multi-billion dollar dairy industry on Monday after Westland Milk Products revealed that lactoferrin powder with excessive nitrate levels had been exported to China. Both New Zealand's Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) and Westland Milk insisted that the lactoferrin did not pose a safety risk.

USDA: U.S. Forecast to Produce Record-High Milk Output

USDA anticipates record-high levels of U.S. milk production for both 2013 and 2014, according to the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report. The 2013 milk output is expected to reach 202.1 billion pounds, up from 200.3 billion pounds in 2012 and from 196.2 billion pounds in 2011.
