GDT Sets Benchmark Price for Sweet Whey Powder

German dairy cooperative Molkerei Ammerland has completed its first sweet whey powder (SWP) auction on the Global Dairy Trade (GDT) platform. GDT Director Paul Grave said the online auction has now set a credible market-based benchmark price for globally-traded SWP at US$1,295 per metric ton. “We’re pleased to have a leading European dairy company introduce SWP to GDT, as we move towards meeting the strong demand for whey powder on the platform,” said Grave.

Arla is making a non-binding bid for a majority stake in Arab Dairy Products Company, a listed company based near Cairo. Arab Dairy is interesting because it has a strong position in both the retail sector and food service, which ties in well with Arla’s focus on these particular sales channels. The acquisition can place Arla among the top five or six biggest players in the Egyptian dairy sector, and gives it a market share of 13-15 percent in the cheese categories.
