USDA Raises 2014 Milk Production Forecast

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) raised its 2014 milk production forecast, while its dairy product price forecasts were mixed, according to the first World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report released in two months. The milk production forecast for 2014 was raised by 500 million pounds, to 204.9 billion pounds. The higher milk production is also expected to pressure cheese, butter and dry whey prices.

U.S. Cheese Production Up 2.3% in September

Total U.S. cheese production in September, excluding cottage cheese, totaled 891.8 million pounds, according to data released by the November 8th USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) report. This was up 2.3 percent from September 2012’s 871.5 million pounds but down 1.5 percent, adjusted for an average daily basis, from August 2013’s 935.6 million pounds.
