FDA To Establish a List of US Milk Product Manufacturers and Processors Exporting To China

The FDA is establishing a list of U.S. milk product manufacturers and processors interested in exporting to China to help U.S. manufacturers comply with the new requirements of the Chinese government. Applying for inclusion on the list in voluntary, but products manufactured by firms not on the list could be prevented from entering commerce in China.

Dairy Product Prices Drop Slightly At First GDT Auction of 2014

The first GlobalDairyTrade auction for 2014 brought mixed results. The GDT Price Index dropped by 0.8% to 1455 points. The average winning price was down to US$4,943 a ton from US$4,990 a ton. The slight price drop followed two consecutive gains in the dairy commodity price index, and prices were still about 50 percent higher than a year ago.

Warrnambool CEO Says Stalemate Possible in Cheese Takeover

Warrnambool Cheese & Butter Factory Co. (WCB), the Australian target of a two-way takeover battle, says a stalemate is possible between rival suitors for the nation’s oldest dairy producer. “The prospect of a stalemate is a possibility,” Warrnambool Chief Executive Officer David Lord has stated. “If in the future we ended up with a share register, which was altered in a major way and we had a number of major, large shareholders, then we would continue to manage the business in the interests of all the shareholders.”

WhiteWave Forms Joint Venture With Chinese Dairy

WhiteWave Foods is purchasing 49% of Yashili Zhengzhou, a subsidiary of China Mengniu Dairy. The two companies will pay $85 million for the company, with the price divided according to their ownership of the joint venture. WhiteWave, which distributes organic dairy and produce throughout North America and Europe, said the joint venture is part of a strategy to reach other parts of the world. The Chinese government must still give its approval to the joint venture; that's expected in the first half of the year.

Swiss Dairy Company Emmi Purchases 50% Stake In Mexican Cheese Importer Mexideli

Dairy company Emmi AG has made the annoucement that they are purchasing half of a Mexican cheese importer, the latest example of a Swiss company seeking to boost exports beyond the troubled euro zone, the Alpine nation's largest export market.  Lucerne-based Emmi said it was paying an undisclosed sum to buy a 50% stake in privately-held Mexideli 2000 Holding SA de CV.

Butter Consumption in U.S. Hits 40-Year High

U.S. butter consumption has hit a 40-year high with per-capita consumption reaching 5.6 pounds in 2012, up from the 4.1-pound low in 1997, according to the American Butter Institute. The growth in consumption has been driven by a better understanding of health hazards associated with processed alternatives such as margarine, including a campaign by the Food and Drug Administration against the use of trans fats.

Lactalis is Set to Purchase Tirumala Milk Products for $275 Million

India's Tirumala Milk Products will reportedly sell a controlling stake to European dairy group Lactalis for between $250 million and $300 million, sources said Tuesday. Lactalis will purchase shares from the private equity firm Carlyle Group, which owns 20% of Tirumala, and from the company's founders.

Hilmar Cheese to Complete Texas Plant Expansion in 2014

An expansion project at a Texas Hilmar Cheese plant is expected to be completed this year, which will allow the cheese processor to better serve both its domestic and international customers, the company said. The project includes adding capabilities to the plant's 40-pound natural American-style cheese production line, increasing whey protein production from four varieties to nine and installing a rail line for more shipping options.
