December Cheese Production Ends Year on a High Note

Wisconsin's total cheese production for December was higher compared to year-ago levels. The USDA reports that the state's dairy plants produced 244.7 million pounds of cheese during the month--which was up 5.7 percent from this time last year, and 2.9 percent more compared to November 2012.

A focus of today’s cheese manufacturers in south-central Idaho is turning liquid whey into lactose and whey protein powders, which then are sold to companies across the globe that specialize in baby foods and health products.In just one month’s time — April 2012 — more than 87.2 million pounds of lactose was manufactured in the United States, up 8.3 percent from April 2011, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Concentrated whey protein reached 37.1 million pounds, up 6.9 percent over the same month in 2011.

Nestlé India has entered into an agreement to acquire 26% stake in dairy company Indocon Agro and Allied Activities, which is engaged in milk collection business in Western India. The FMCG major has contract supply arrangements for the West and South markets with Baramati-based Schreiber Dynamix Dairies and Hyderabad-based Heritage Foods for its curd and ultra-high temperature milk.

Tillamook Expands Oregon Facility to Process Whey

Dairy Forward Pricing Program Allows Forward Price Contracts

Dairy producers and cooperative associations of producers may enter into forward price contracts under the Dairy Forward Pricing Program through Sept. 30. The 2008 Farm Bill initially prohibited new forward contracts from being entered into after Sept. 30, 2012, however passage of American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 extended the authorization of the 2008 Farm Bill's Dairy Forward Pricing Program and revised the program to allow new contracts to be entered into until Sept. 30, 2013.
