Commercial disappearance of dairy products during 2012 totaled 201.8 billion lbs., 1.7% more than 2011, and surpassing total U.S. milk production (200.3 billion lbs.) and total U.S. marketings (199.3 billion lbs.) for the year.

China to Ramp Up Dairy Imports as Hong Kong Cuts Passive Supply

China will import more dairy products to soothe public anger over toxic homegrown milk and other products, according to Zhou Bohua, the head of the State Administration of Industry and Commerce. China imported 844,000 tons of dairy products valued at $2.97 billion in the first eight months of 2012, up 28.4% and 26.2% respectively from the same period a year earlier, according to the Dairy Association of China. New Zealand, the United States and France were the top three sources by volume, representing 51.4%, 16.1% and 7.4% respectively of China's total dairy imports.

US Dairy Exports to China Market Keep Flowing

Regulators in China and the United States have resolved a nearly three-year dispute over health and sanitary certification of US dairy exports, ensuring continued shipments to a fast-growing market. According to the USDA, $430 million worth of dairy products were exported to China in 2012. The top goods were lactose ($118 million), whey protein concentrate ($108 million), dry whey ($66 million), skim-milk powder ($42 million) and cheese ($37 million).
