CWT Assists with 3.2 Million Pounds of Cheese Export Sales

GlobalDairyTrade Auction Prices Slide 1.1%

Prices slid further at the latest GlobalDairyTrade (GDT) event. Overall the GDT Price Index was 1.1% lower than the previous auction, with milk powder and cheddar value declines weighing most on the index. The overall winning price was US$3950/t, which was below the US$4000/t mark for the first time since February 2013.

WI CDR Launches TURBO Program To Speed Commercialization Of Product Development

The University of Wisconsin has partnered with the Center for Dairy Research to establish a grant-funded program that assists U.S. dairy processors in commercializing new technology-based ideas for the industry. The Tech Transfer University Research and Business Opportunity program is making several projects available to processors, such as high-pressure processing of packaged cheese, high-protein snacking cheese, milk-derived whey protein concentrate and highly functional milk protein.

Land O'Lakes To Close One Wisconsin Cheese Plant and Expand Another

Land O' Lakes is planning to close one Wisconsin cheese plant and expand another. The company will stop processing milk at its Denmark, WI, plant in July due to lack of profitability from its provolone and mozzarella semi-soft Italian cheese products. Land O' Lakes also plans for a multimillion-dollar expansion to its Kiel, WI, facility with new milk silos and cheese vats.

March U.S. Exports Top $700 Million

The value of U.S. dairy exports were estimated at $725 million in March, the highest total in history. It also marked the 12th consecutive month export values topped $550 million, according to USDA’s Economic Research Service and U.S. Department of Commerce. Exports of cheese, whey proteins, lactose and milk protein concentrate all reached new highs, while butterfat exports were the most in more than 20 years and nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder (NDM/SMP) rebounded from the level of the previous four months.
