Coca-Cola Buys Mexican Dairy

Jugos del Valle, a joint venture between Coca-Cola and Mexican bottlers of Coca-Cola, has won regulatory approval to purchase Mexican dairy company Santa Clara for an undisclosed sum. Acquiring the company, which makes milk, ice cream, yogurt and other products, gives Coca-Cola access to the Mexican dairy market, "one of the most important segments in the nonalcoholic beverage industry in terms of scale and value," said Jugos del Valle chairman Felipe Nunez.

The House Agriculture Committee Approves House Version of Farm Bill

The House Agriculture Committee has approved the House version of the Farm Bill by a vote of 35 to 11. The bill, which costs nearly $100 billion a year, would cut $3.5 billion annually from current spending levels and $1.6 billion from SNAP. The House bill differs from the Senate's by giving farmers a choice between a price support program that pays when prices fall below certain levels and a taxpayer-paid revenue protection program similar to the one included in the Senate bill.

Fonterra Would Like To Resume Operations at NZ Dairies' Studholme Plant

While awaiting regulatory approval of its deal to purchase New Zealand Dairies, Fonterra says it wants to begin operating one of the failed company's factories in Studholme, New Zealand. New Zealand Dairies was founded six years ago to build a whole milk powder processing plan on 55ha at Studholme. The plant was commissioned in 2007 at a cost of $108m. It has the capacity to process about 800,000 liters of milk powder a day, or 30,000 tons a season.
