Select Milk Producers, Inc. and Continental Dairy Products, Inc. Dairy Coops Merge

Select Milk Producers, Inc. and Continental Dairy Products, Inc., cooperative milk marketing associations announced their merger, effective Monday, September 1, 2014. Mike McCloskey, CEO of Select Milk Produers, Inc. stated that the merger facilitates milk marketing strategies, eliminates market confusion with regard to identity by presenting one "face" to the market, and expands geographic coverage and influence for the combined entity. Select, a New Mexico cooperative and Continental, an Ohio cooperative, both have principal administrative offices in Artesia, New Mexico.

Dairy Auction Prices Drop Again – GDT Falls 6%

Russia's ban on food imports from Europe is contributing to the fall in dairy prices, economists say. Dairy prices fell 6% at the latest GlobalDairyTrade auction on September 2nd, the fourth fall of 4.9% or more in the past five auctions. The average winning price at the auction was US$2787 a ton, down 45% from the peak of US$5042 in February, while the trade-weighted GlobalDairyTrade price index fell to 822 points, its lowest level since August 2012.

European Milk Board Calls for Voluntary Production Cuts

The European Milk Board (EMB) says measures planned by EU Commission are not sufficient to stabilize the milk market which has been in free fall since Russia banned the importation of dairy products from the EU.  "The planned private storage aid for butter, skimmed milk powder and certain cheeses and the extension of the period for public intervention do not provide a sufficient solution", commented Romauld Schaber, President of the European Milk Board (EMB).
