 Cheese Market Tightens

A failure to build cheese stocks in the first half of the year, coupled with strong global markets and a July heat-wave that’s slashing milk production, has tightened the cheese market. On June 30, American cheese stocks were 619.0 million lbs., down 1.3% from a year ago, according to USDA’s latest “Cold Storage” report.

This is equivalent to about 53 days of use, the lowest for this date since 2007. Total cheese stocks at midyear were 1.051 billion lbs., up 1.3% from last year.
