Cheese Producers Cheesed About New Laws

Canada's biggest cheese producers have asked the Federal Court to block new federal regulations that are scheduled to come into effect Dec. 14.

The new rules will require cheese makers to use more full-fat milk and less of the ingredients typically labeled as milk solids.

Kraft Canada Inc., Parmalat Canada Inc. and Saputo Inc. argue the intent of the regulation is to provide additional revenue for dairy farmers and will raise the cost for consumers.

A spokesperson for the cheese makers' group, calling itself KPS, says any gains for dairy farmers will likely be short-lived because the higher prices may discourage consumption.

The change was supported by dairy farmers but the cheese industry has been complaining about it for months.
