3-A SSI Announces 2012 Student Travel Scholarship Award Recipients

3-A Sanitary Standards, Inc. (3-A SSI) announces the recipients of the 3-A SSI 2012 Student Travel Scholarship Award, a program intended to help motivated, career-oriented students to participate in the annual education program of 3-A SSI and gain comprehensive knowledge about sanitary design for food processing equipment and systems.  Recipients will participate in the 3-A SSI education program, ‘Food Safety: Where Does 3-A Fit?’, and related events on May 14-17, 2012 at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Milwaukee, WI.

The recipients of the 2012 awards include:

• Breanne Harlan, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and
• Esmond Nyarko, University of Vermont.

According to Dr. Ronald Schmidt (University of Florida), chair of 3-A SSI and long-time educator, “Food safety has become a highly important emphasis in food science and food microbiology curricula.  However, sanitary equipment design, a critical element of food safety, is not often covered in depth in our programs.  The 3-A SSI program provides a truly special opportunity for future food industry professionals to supplement their educational experience, gain in-depth knowledge about sanitary equipment design in ‘the real world’ and network with a truly diverse group of industry leaders.”

Candidates for the 2012 awards demonstrated interest and commitment to food safety and quality as a student enrolled full-time in a food technology, food science, dairy science or other closely related program (undergraduate or graduate level) at a college or university in the U.S. or Canada.  Award recipients were selected by a 3-A SSI review committee on the basis of a personal essay, official transcripts and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or department head.

See the 3-A SSI website at www.3-a.org, News & Events, or go directly to http://www.3-a.org/news/events.html for complete details on the upcoming education program and related events, including registration information and Work Group meeting schedules.  Sponsorship opportunities are also available.  Sponsorship represents a great opportunity to build recognition as a supporter of the expanding education mission of 3-A SSI.
