No Growth Forecasted in New Zealand Milk Production

New Zealand’s Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) continues to forecast zero growth for the 2012/13 dairying season. MPI recently released its half yearly “Situation and Outlook” update. The ministry says, “assuming a return to average climatic conditions, milk production is expected to remain at 2011/12 levels in the current season. While this equates to zero growth relative to the previous season, it nonetheless reflects high milk production relative to historic levels.”

New Zealand has had an extremely strong start to the 2012/13 milk production season, with official data showing milk collection to be 8% ahead across the first four months of the season. Therefore MPI must be factoring in a significant slowdown in milk output during the latter part of the milk production season, which runs until May 31, 2013.
