New Company Focuses on Muscle-Building Ingredient
By Peter Gill

Not everything is turning sour in the milk business. Undeterred by the falling global demand for dairy products being reported by Fonterra, a new Taranaki based venture has decided to swim against the dairy tide, and they are hitching their wagon to a dairy star called micellar casein. Micellar casein is a rich muscle-building protein source used in sports drinks.

The newly formed Taranaki Company Ingredient Solutions says it intends to extract the casein from between 50 million and 100 million liters of milk per year.

The company says it has identified markets for the product, being the makers of energy and sports drinks, and the makers of other forms of health-promoting drinks sold in bars. The company is now seeking $30 million in a share offer, to build a plant. Target date for going into production is sometime in the third quarter of the year.

The company has begun advertising for suppliers, who will be paid on the same basis as Fonterra suppliers. But unlike Fonterra suppliers, those providing milk to Ingredient Solutions will not be required to invest in the company.

The share offer comprises 27.5 million shares with a face value of $1 each. The minimum investment is 500,000. Ingredient Solutions says it has had inquiries from corporate investors in New Zealand, North Asia and Europe.
