 National Milk Production Up During Third Quarter  

Milk production in the United States during the July - September quarter totaled 51.1 billion pounds, up 3.5 percent from the July - September quarter last year.


The average number of milk cows in the United States during the quarter was 9.27 million head, 15,000 head more than the April - June quarter, and 44,000 head more than the same period last year.


For the month of September, 15.5 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was up 4.1 percent higher than in 2013, but less than the previous month's 16.2 billion.


California continues to have the highest total production with about 3.29 billion pounds. Colorado had the greatest increase in year-to-year output as that state produced 298 million pounds of milk in August, up 10.8 percent from the same month last year.
