 Prices Rise At Last Fonterra Global Dairy Trade Auction of the Year  

Fonterra’s Global Dairy Trade for dairy products saw prices rise by 2.4% in the last auction of 2014. The trade-weighted GDT price index was up 2.4%, lifting it off a five-year low but prices are still down nearly 50% since February.


The average winning price was $2609 a ton, up from $2513 at the previous sale on December 2, while volumes were down significantly with only 35,390 tons sold across all products, dropping 9.9% from the December 2 auction.


Whole milk powder prices rose by 1.4% to $2,270 a ton while anhydrous milk fat also gained 10.8% and butter rose by 10.4%.

In contrast, skim milk powder dropped in price by 3.2% to $2,320 a ton. Butter milk powder prices also dropped by 9.5% and cheddar fell by 0.6%. 

There were 667 qualified bidders at the December 16th  auction with 126 winning bidders. The next auction is schedule for January 6, 2015.
